On the morning of July 1st, 1916, the Newfoundland regiment received orders to move forward on Beaumont Hamel, on the first day of the battle of the Somme. After approximately 30 minutes of fighting, 324 soldiers had been killed and 386 wounded. Only 68 showed up to roll call the following day.
